Express Entry Category-Based Draws: What to Expect in 2026
By PK Immigration Services
Why category-based draws matter
Since 2023, IRCC has been issuing Express Entry invitations not just by Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, but also by category — targeting candidates with skills Canada urgently needs.
In 2025, IRCC published its updated category list, putting renewed emphasis on healthcare and social services, trades, education, and strong French-language proficiency. Heading into 2026, the same categories remain the most likely paths to an Invitation to Apply (ITA) with a lower CRS cut-off than general draws.
The 2026 categories
- Healthcare and social services occupations
- Skilled trades occupations
- STEM occupations
- French-language proficiency (CLB 7+ in French)
- Education occupations (new in 2025)
- Agriculture and agri-food occupations
How to position yourself
1. Confirm your NOC code is on the eligible list for the category you want.
2. Boost French — even CLB 7 French opens the largest category-based draws of the year.
3. Keep a year of continuous work experience in your target NOC, ideally Canadian.
4. Re-validate language results — IELTS and TEF are valid for 2 years; expiry kills profiles.
What we expect in 2026
IRCC has signaled smaller overall PR admissions targets, which means category draws will become more competitive, not less. Expect more frequent French and healthcare rounds, and fewer "all-program" general draws.
If you are unsure which category fits your profile, book a consultation and we'll map your NOC, language scores and work history against the latest Ministerial Instructions.
